Getting to Sierra Leone ...

All persons entering Sierra Leone must have a valid passport or travel document. Citizens of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) do not require a visa to enter the country. Visas are issued at Sierra Leone's overseas missions. If one isn't present in close proximity, please see our visa services page to find out how Visit Sierra Leone can help.

... By Air

Freetown International Airport The main option of getting to Sierra Leone is by air and land but you can also get there by sea.

Direct flights from Europe are available from London and Brussels through BMI and SN Brussels. Sierra Leone lies in the same time zone as Europe and only 6 ½ flying hours direct from London and Paris.

You can also use Royal Air Maroc from New York if travelling from the United States.

Therefore there is no jet lag.

Kenya Airways also fly from Nairobi via Accra. Kenya Airways operates in partnership with KLM which opens up more options for connecting flights. Other regional flights include, Paramount Airlines (Guinea), Slok (Banjul, Monrovia) and Bellview Nigeria (Lagos, Banjul, Accra).

All international flights arrive at Freetown International Airport, Lungi. Please see our flight schedule for more information. Click here if you require hotel reservation.

FerryThe airport and mainland Freetown is separated by the Sierra Leone River and the main way of getting to Freetown at this moment is with the Ferry or hovercraft. You could drive through Port Loko but this makes more sense if you're not heading for Freetown.

... By land

Currently Sierra Leone can be accessed by road from Guinea(Conakry) and Liberia. Special permits are required if transiting the border with a private vehicle. Private taxis, buses and trucks commute daily to and from Conakry/Freetown.

... By Sea

Sierra Leone has the 3rd largest natural harbour in the world and used to service cruise ships. Cargo and Passenger ships berth at the Queen Elizabeth II quay, while some passenger/Cargo and private crafts can land at the Government Wharf in central Freetown, arriving most times from Conakry and Banjul. Enquiries should be made to Cargo Shipping Agencies.
