In the heart of Sierra Leone’s growing cycling scene stands Abdul Karim Kamara, better known as Stylish—a visionary, a competitor, and the driving force behind Tour de Lunsar, the country’s premier cycling event. From humble beginnings as a bicycle mechanic in Freetown to founding a race that now attracts both local and international cyclists, Stylish’s journey is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep love for the sport. What started as a simple dream—to give young riders a platform to compete—has transformed into a movement that is shaping the future of cycling in Sierra Leone. In this exclusive Q&A, Stylish shares his story, the challenges he has faced, and his vision for making Sierra Leone a global cycling destination.
This year’s Tour dates are 24th to 27th April 2025.
1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey before starting Tour de Lunsar?
I am Abdul Karim Kamara, also known as Stylish. I grew up in Freetown, where I started fixing bicycles as a mechanic. In 2007, I moved to Lunsar to pursue my high school education. My first three months were very difficult, but I quickly realized that as a skilled bicycle mechanic, I could open a local bike shop and continue fixing bikes for a living.
During this time, I noticed that there were no cycling events in Lunsar, neither in the community nor in schools. I started reaching out to schools to encourage them to include bicycle racing in their sports meets. However, getting racing bikes was a challenge. As a mechanic, I began modifying hybrid bikes into racing bikes and lending them to participants.
In 2010, I used these modified bikes to organize my first race, which I named Tour de Lunsar. The race was initially just for me and other riders to compete within Lunsar. I won the first and second editions in 2010 and 2011. Every year since then, I have been inspired to keep the race going.
2. What inspired you to start Tour de Lunsar?
I was inspired to create Tour de Lunsar as a platform for young people to showcase their talent through cycling. I also wanted to use cycling to promote Sierra Leonean tourism, attracting people from around the world to experience the beauty of our country.
3. What challenges did you face in getting Tour de Lunsar off the ground? How did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge is funding. Every year, I struggle to find financial support to organize the race. Even now, I am working hard to secure funds for the 2025 Tour de Lunsar.
4. Where does the name ‘Stylish’ come from?
My nickname Stylish comes from my unique bicycle tricks during childhood. I would ride around the Lunsar community performing different stunts, and people started calling me “Stylish.”
5. How did you first get into cycling? Was there a particular moment that sparked your passion?
I got into cycling after working as a bicycle mechanic. My inspiration was to see young people have the opportunity to race beyond Sierra Leone.
6. Have you ever competed in cycling races yourself?
Yes, I have competed in many national and international races across Sierra Leone.
What were your most memorable experiences?
One of my most memorable moments was winning a school race where I overlapped every other rider and finished in first place. My fans lifted me up and danced in celebration. That was the moment I felt very proud of myself, and everyone believed I was the best cyclist in the country.
7. Who are your biggest influences or mentors in the sport?
My biggest influence is the Tour de France, the world’s most prestigious cycling event. Whenever I watch it, I think about my country, Sierra Leone. My vision is to continue improving Tour de Lunsar, making it a race that attracts international cyclists, just like the Tour de France.
8. Which Sierra Leonean cyclists should we look out for in the future?
There are several talented cyclists with great potential:
- Ibrahim S. Jalloh
- Alusine Broko
- Moses L. Kamara
These cyclists dream of becoming professionals if given the right opportunities. Moses L. Kamara recently made history by winning a stage in Ivory Coast, becoming the first Sierra Leonean cyclist to win an international race.
9. Has the cycling culture in Sierra Leone changed since you started Tour de Lunsar?
Yes! The cycling culture has grown significantly. Many young people are now getting into the sport, and their dream is to become professional cyclists, competing both inside and outside Sierra Leone.
10. What role do local communities play in making the event a success?
My local community plays a huge role in ensuring that Tour de Lunsar happens every year. Over 100 volunteers from my community support the four-day event.
11. How do you attract both local and international cyclists to the race?
I use social media and my website (Tour de Lunsar) to attract both local and international cyclists.
12. Have there been any standout moments or performances in past editions?
Yes, there have been many unforgettable moments!
For example, in the 2023 and 2024 editions, the winners came from Nigeria. Their celebration and the emotional connection to the event were truly special for me as an organizer.
13. As a cycling advocate, what message do you have for young Sierra Leoneans who might be interested in the sport?
I want to humbly request financial support from the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Tourism. With their support, I can elevate Tour de Lunsar into one of the world’s top cycling events. Additionally, I would like to expand the event to other communities across Sierra Leone.
14. If you could bring one major change to the cycling landscape in Sierra Leone, what would it be?
I want Sierra Leone to become one of the best cycling destinations in the world. My dream is for us to host the World Championships and many other international cycling events in the future.
